Evansville, IN - An Indiana congressman is looking to expand a historic trail, and have lead through the Hoosier state.

Indiana Congressman Luke Messer is pushing to expand the "Lewis and Clark National Historic Trail"  east.

It will then follow Lewis and Clark's path down the Ohio River.

Messer's  "Eastern Legacy Extension Act"  would extend the trail 1,200 miles -- through Indiana, Kentucky, Ohio, and up to Pennsylvania.

Right now it starts near St. Louis.

Historian, Donna Spencer says it's likely Lewis and Clark is excited about the possible expansion.

"Most likely here at this riverfront. This riverfront was established long before the city was even settled in 1797. So in 1806, this would have been one of the stops on the way," said Donna Spencer.

Last week, Messer's bill passed the US House, and will now go to the senate for a vote.
