WASHINGTON, D.C. (Friday, April 27, 2018) — U.S. Rep. Luke Messer (IN-06) today invited House members to join him in nominating President Trump for the 2019 Nobel Peace Prize, which Messer has been calling for since March.

In an historic move, early Friday morning, North and South Korea announced they had agreed to end the 65-year-old war between the two countries and work toward a nuclear-free Korean peninsula.

Messer sent a letter to his fellow House members asking them to join him in nominating President Trump for the Nobel Peace Prize. A formal nomination letter will then be sent to the Nobel Peace Prize Committee.

The letter Messer sent to his colleagues begins, “Given the extraordinary announcement of the end of the Korean War and a clear path toward denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula, I am circulating a letter to nominate President Trump for the 2019 Nobel Peace Prize.”

Members of Congress are permitted to submit nominations for the award to the Norwegian Nobel Committee that is responsible for selecting Nobel Peace Prize Laureates.

Messer credits President Trump for “working tirelessly to apply maximum pressure on North Korea to end its illicit weapons programs and bring peace to the region.”

South Korea’s foreign minister also credited President Trump for bringing the two sides together, saying "Clearly, credit goes to President Trump…He's been determined to come to grips with this from day one."

North Korea recently announced it would suspend nuclear tests and launches of ballistic missiles, and would shut down a nuclear site.

Messer first suggested President Trump deserves the Nobel Peace Prize if North Korea disarms its nuclear weapons program in early March, after the historic meeting between President Trump and Kim Jong-un, which will take place in the coming days, was first announced.
