WASHINGTON, D.C. (Friday, April 27, 2018) — Following historic progress between North and South Korea, U.S. Rep. Luke Messer (IN-06) announced he is gathering congressional support to formally nominate President Trump for the Nobel Peace Prize, which Messer has been calling for since March.

Early Friday morning, North and South Korea announced they had agreed to end the 65-year-old war between the two countries and work toward a nuclear-free Korean peninsula.

“We are seeing unprecedented progress toward peace, and it’s a direct result of President Trump’s strong leadership.” Messer said. “Following this historic announcement, President Trump should get the Nobel Peace Prize. Our peace through strength strategy is delivering never before seen results.”

As a member of Congress, Messer is actively gathering support from his colleagues to nominate the President for the 2019 Nobel Peace Prize.

South Korea’s foreign minister also credited President Trump for bringing the two sides together, saying "Clearly, credit goes to President Trump…He's been determined to come to grips with this from day one."

North Korea recently announced it would suspend nuclear tests and launches of ballistic missiles, and would shut down a nuclear site.

Messer first suggested President Trump deserves the Nobel Peace Prize if North Korea disarms its nuclear weapons program in early March, after the historic meeting between President Trump and Kim Jong-un, which will take place in the coming days, was first announced.
