WSCH 99.3: Messer Proposes Funding Americans First ActThe bill attempts to stop U.S. taxpayers from subsidizing Sanctuary Cities.
Indiana 6th District Congressman Luke Messer has authored a bill in attempt to stop U.S. taxpayers from subsidizing Sanctuary Cities.
The following story was published by 99.3-WSCH on March 9, 2018. On Monday, Messer introduced legislation to block localities from getting illegal immigrant bonuses by tying federal funds to citizenship. Messer, who is running for U.S. Senate, authored The Funding Americans First Act which would require federal agencies to allocate grant funding to states and localities based on the number of U.S. citizens and legal residents only. Federal agencies currently use Census data to determine where state and local grant funding goes. Currently, the Census includes illegal immigrant data. Messer said cities like San Jose, California, where illegal immigrants make up a large part of the population, should not qualify for increased federal funds – echoing the sentiment of President Trump. “No locality should get an illegal immigrant bonus,” Messer said. “Sanctuary states and cities in California continue to receive more funds simply because they choose to disobey the law and harbor illegal immigrants. My legislation would ensure Hoosiers aren’t subsidizing these sanctuary states and cities with their federal tax dollars.” If passed into law, The Funding Americans First Act would go into effect on October 1, 2021. |
