WASHINGTON (Friday, July 14, 2017) — Rep. Luke Messer (IN-06) today voted in support of legislation to rebuild the U.S. military and restore national security.

The National Defense Authorization Act of 2017, which passed the U.S. House of Representatives today, authorizes and prioritizes funding for the Department of Defense (DoD) and military activities for Fiscal Year 2018.

Messer spoke on the floor of the House in support of the bill.

“Today, Congress is taking corrective action to rebuild our military, support our troops and provide for a strong national defense,” Messer said in his remarks. “This defense authorization act fulfills our promise to prioritize America’s safety and protect our citizens from ongoing global threats, including radical Islamic terror.”

After half a decade of cuts, the bill increases resources for every branch of the U.S. military, supports a robust missile defense program, strengthens America’s cyber warfare capabilities and prohibits transferring detainees from Guantanamo Bay to the United States. It also funds a 2.4 percent pay raise for U.S. troops, the largest increase in years.

The NDAA authorizes $613.8 billion in base funding to the DoD, including a $28.5 billion increase above the President’s budget for essential readiness recovery.

A video and text of Messer’s remarks are available below:

“Congress’ most important job is to provide for the national defense of our country. Yet, during the past six years, America’s military resources were downsized and slashed.

Today, Congress is taking corrective action to rebuild our military, support our troops, and provide for a strong national defense. This defense authorization act fulfills our promise to prioritize America’s safety and protect our citizens from ongoing global threats, including radical Islamic terror.

This bipartisan bill increases resources for every branch of the U-S military, and ensures our troops receive the compensation they deserve with the largest pay raise in years. It also supports a robust missile defense program and strengthens America’s cyber warfare capabilities.

Simply put: this bill makes Americans safer and I urge your support.”
